Install Your Basic Magnolia Kit in 8 Steps

1. Determine the height and slope of the ceiling.
Using a laser level (or other reliable method), establish “true level” and mark each corner of the perimeter. Based on the “true level”, determine & place a mark for the height and slope of the ceiling on each corner of the perimeter:

  • Drop a minimum 3” below joists on the high side (side opposite the gutter).

  • Allow at least 1/8” per foot slope for the ceiling panels toward the high end of the gutter.

  • Allow at least 1/16” per foot slope for the gutter toward the downspout.

Snap a chalk line around the perimeter to outline the height & slope. This line marks the ceiling height and defines installation for the bottom of the wall channels, and the top of the gutter.

2. Install support boards for gutter and wall channels as needed.
Use treated 2” lumber with exterior deck screws. Many times installers opt to rip the 2” board on a slant so that the bottom will be on a level with the bottom of the gutter or wall channel.

  • If support does not already exist, install board between posts (on inner edge) so that the gutter (or wall channel) is installed flush against the posts.

  • Do the same between post and house if necessary for wall channel support.

3. Install flashing on Gutter Supports.

This is ordinarily all the flashing that is needed. Cantilevered decks are an exception, and they are explained in the Installation Instructions.

4. Install gutter.
Use all hanger brackets provided (every 13-14 inches). Attach with provided stainless steel screws and apply provided sealant.

5. Install corner boxes & wall channels.
Attach with provided stainless steel screws and apply provided sealant.
Note: Make sure that wall channel ends do not overlap within the corner boxes; if necessary, snip wall channel edges and re-bend upwards.

6. Water test.
If a leak occurs, it will happen around the perimeter (not on the panels). Before installing the panels, use a small sprayer and apply water on the walls above the wall channels and gutter.

7. Install ceiling panels.
Fan/light mounting kits and/or can lights are installed during panel installation. Due to the exact measurements of your deck, it may be required to expose more or less of the first panel. This is illustrated with the blue tape in the photo. Details are explained in the Installation manual included with your kit.
